The Illuminated Path
Mar. 4th, 2010 02:43 pmNot all of you know this, but I've been seeing a career counselor to help me figure out which way I should be going. She helped me to make a life-changing decision.
I'm going back to school in order to become a science teacher!
We desperately need more science teachers who are enthusiastic about the subject and can get kids excited about it too. I want to teach kids the critical thinking skills that they need to get them through a confusing life on an unpredictable planet. I want to show them how to apply these skills to their everyday lives. I want to be the kind of teacher who NEVER tells a kid that they're not trying hard enough. If the kid isn't getting it, then it's MY responsibility as a teacher to find another way to get through to that student. My career counselor said that I want to give students what I was largely denied in my own education. That sounds about right to me.
So I have several years of school ahead of me. I only have one year of college under my belt so far, and then I need to get teaching credentials. This is going to be a long, hard road, and ultimately, it will be totally worth it.
I've never had a clear goal in front of me before. It feels good. Compelling.
